HARSHA
Hello & Vanakkam!
I am Harshavardhan Devaraj, I go by Harsha (He/Him). I am a curious engineer who wants to be part of solutions that assist humanity. I currently work in healthcare space developing and testing sensors for surgical applications. I come with a diverse skill set which I have acquired over the years to fulfill demands of various projects. I am currently a mechanical engineer who designs circuits, creates simulations for bio-electricity and does in-vivo animal surgeries.
In my free time I like hiking and skiing.
Welcome to my personal website. You can find my CV and contact information here.

Projects
Smart Sensing Surgical Drill to Detect Nerve Proximities
We are developing a surgical drill bit capable of real-time tissue proximity sensing to aid oral surgeons in avoiding critical tissues such as Inferior Alveolar Nerve and maxillary sinus during implant placements. We completed our custom complete electrode model finite element simulation work. Currently we are doing in-vivo animal studies at Center for Surgical Innovation at Dartmouth to further test our sensor.
Tissue Margin Sensing Surgical Stapler for Thoracic and Colo-Rectal Use
We are integrating electrical impedance margin sensing into current robotic and manual surgical staplers for real-time intraoperative guidance to maintain positive surgical margin. We are testing ex-vivo human tissues and stapler prototyping. In-vivo testing and development are in pipeline.
Bioimpedance Tomography Assisted Ultrasound Imaging for Breast Cancer Screening
We are integrating electrical impedance tomography (EIT) into existing augmented ultrasound breast ultrasound system to reduce false positive in tumor detection for high density breast tissue patients. We have retrofitted a high-density multi-channel EIT system onto Augmented Breast with full saline environment to overlay electrical conductivity maps on ultrasound scans.
Design And Development Of Robot for Autonomous Floor Cleaning
This R&D project was done with Roots MultiClean Limited for their Roots Wizzard II scrubber. We developed a robotic accessory that converts the existing machine to clean the given area autonomously. We were a team of three students and my contribution was in robot chassis design, fabrication, drive selection, sensing and controller programing.
Sensing of Motorway Terrain for Automatic Suspension Adaptability and Localized Terrain Mapping
This research project was done under guidance of Dr. Udhayakumar Sadasivam. We developed a system to measure the irregularities of the road using LVDT sensor and myRIO for applications in suspension adaptability and mapping of terrain. In India every year around 10,000 people die from accidents due to bad road conditions. By sensing the irregularities (speed bumps and potholes) in the road and warning the driver via the navigation system to slow down, the accidents can be avoided.
PUMA, Portable Assisted Mobility Access
This is a multinational project focused on design and development of a vehicle that was aimed at baby-boomers’ transport problems through ergonomic design principles and offered first-mile, last-mile solutions. I was leading the team this time from PSG. My contribution in this project was consumer insight, product lifecycle management and engineering design (CAD and Analysis)
RSMS, Reconfigurable Shared Use Mobility Systems
This is a multinational project focused on design and development of a vehicle which was aimed at solving urban mobility problems through shape-changing vehicle design to accommodate more people and at the same time occupy lesser road space. As a design engineer from my college, my responsibility was to design space-frame for the vehicle. My main challenge was to maintain structural integrity of space frame while vehicle changes shape modes.
Experience
Systems Application Engineer
Medical Instrumentation, Analog Devices Inc.,
I am working as a systems application engineer for surgical instrumentation and robotics applications at Analog Devices Inc. I am also the impedance technologies expert for the team. I work out of the headquarters in Wilmington, Massachusetts.
Graduate Research Assistant
Halter Lab, Dartmouth College
I worked as a graduate research assistant for Prof. Ryan Halter and Prof. Ethan Murphy. This research work will form my doctoral dissertation.
Research Intern – R&D
Roots MultiClean Limited, India
Roots MultiClean Ltd is India’s largest manufacturer and exporter of commercial and industrial cleaning machines. I am working as a research intern at their R&D department.
Teaching Assistant
Sensor Interface Workshop - Sensorics Lab
Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, PSG College of Technology
Worked as a teaching assistant to Dr. S.Udhayakumar in Sensor Interface workshop and taught sensor basics, interfacing with LabVIEW and measurement to over 350 attendees during 3 editions of the workshop. Sensors that were taught included ‘Accelerometer, LVDT, Thermocouple, Strain Gauge, Hot Wire Anemometer and Machine Vision’.
Sr.Volunteer - Teacher
Make A Difference Organisation-MAD
MAD is an NGO working for equitable educational outcomes for underprivileged kids in shelter homes. I worked as a Volunteer at MAD for two years personally taking care of the Mathematics and Physics subjects for eight children.
Team Lead - PSG
Team 5, Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education PACE
PACE International initiative by General Motors, Siemens, HP, Oracle and Autodesk and other companies for Collaborative Engineering Education established in 1999. I lead the team from PSG during the Personal Urban Mobility Access project to Annual Forum 2017 ITESM, Toluca, Mexico.
Student Executive – Joint Secretary
Global Leaders’ Forum, PSG College of Technology
As a part of this student run association, we organised national events such as Tedx, Model UNs, Ophthalmology camps and Environment awareness programs. I was on the executive board as joint secretary and held responsibilities in administration, finance and public relations of the association. I was part of 8 event organisation teams as a part of this club.
